slideshowMt. Tam Peak Hike to

A fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Fund, this event consists of either a 7.5 or 11 mile hike in Muir Woods and up Mt. Tamalpais.

"The Peak Hike is true to its logo -- lots of ups and down. Starting in a calm meadow, we hiked up to the top of Muir Woods then began the long descent to the bottom -- only to turn right around and head up the challenging Boot Jack. In our practice hike, we had done Boot Jack before so I was prepared for the long, steep climb. Like most things, it didn't seem as bad the second time around. The payoff came when we reached Pan Toll and then continued down along the Coastal trail with stunning views of the Pacific ocean, the bay and San Francisco. Definitely glorious! The finish line was met with music, good food and a nice rest on the grass. And, I won a pair of socks in the raffle! A fellow team member won hiking poles so we can prepare to do this again next year." -- Linda Siegel

Sacramento Danskin Women's Triathlon to

This event, in Sacramento, includes a half-mile open water swim in Lake Washington, a 12-mile flat bike ride on the road and a 3.1 mile flat run. Team Survivor members have the option of just walking the run course, being part of a relay team or doing the complete triathlon. Plan to make a weekend of it, because there is a Team Survivor breakfast with race spokeswoman Sally Edwards on Saturday morning and race registration and a women's health expo all day Saturday.

"Being part of Team Survivor and participating in the Danskin Triathlon is like no other triathlon. It's rewarding in so many other ways than just crossing the finish line. Team Survivor has evolved with the Danskin Triathlon and is extremely special to me being a breast cancer survivor." -- Colleen Galloway

"We did it. We all finished. Every woman who entered the race, over eleven hundred women finished the tri. Some were in their twenties. Some in their sixties, seventies, maybe more. Many had won the challenge of cancer. They had survived chemo and mastectomies and much more. And they came out this day and swam, and cycled and walked or ran and finished. And best of all, they cheered each other on and celebrated together!" -- Joyce Thompson. Read more of Joyce's inspiring Danskin story...

Marin Human Race

This is a flat four-mile run/walk managed by Marin Nexus on behalf of our community. This event allows any Marin County nonprofit or community group to raise funds and awareness for their organizations, and to have fun bringing the community together. Individuals collect pledges, and 90% of the total is given to the nonprofit of their choice.

"Nancy Weninger, our founder, and I participated in the Human race. We walked. Nancy was injured and couldn't run and I had just finished a marathon and really couldn't run! Truth is if we both had been able to run we would not had time to talk because Nancy runs a lot faster than I do! So we walked and talked. It was a great experience and we learned a lot about each other too! So for all you walkers out there, this is a perfect event for you to do and the food at the end is terrific! It helps support Team Survivor also. How can you lose -- good company, good food, a a great cause! See you next year!" -- Penny Noble

MCBW Dipsea Hike/Run

This is a challenging 7.2 mile hike that begins with the fabled Dipsea Steps at Old Mill Park in Mill Valley. After 300 stair steps, the hike/run continues along the Dipsea trail up and down to Muir Woods. Then up to the finish "tree" line near the site of the Mountain Play. The race is a benefit for the Marin Cancer Breast Watch.

"Training for this race got me back into the exercise mode. I had always heard of the fabled Dipsea trail and wondered if it would even be possible to make it beyond Dipsea stairs. But after a couple of months of training with Team Survivor, including several treks up the stairs, the hike was a piece of cake! With Nancy's great coaching and our fun practice hikes, I knew that I could make it. This was the first year for this event and it was well supported with great food and drink at the end." -- Linda Siegel

Tiburon Mile

This is a 1 nautical mile open water swim from Angel Island back to the "mainland" of Tiburon, California. The Tiburon Mile attracts all levels of swimmers from the local area and around the world. The race is a benefit for Special Olympics.

The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure

Running race options: 5k (3.1 mile) and a 1 mile course. This race attracts over 12,000 people of all ability levels who run or walk either distance.

"Bright and early on a recent Sunday morning, I arrived at Golden Gate Park to participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. I was among approximately 9000 participants. I walked the three mile course - talking, playing and laughing! I felt touched, supported and encouraged in the midst of this large gathering whose collective intention was to raise awareness and funds in the fight against breast cancer. Those of us who are breast cancer survivors were identified by pink caps and T-shirts, helping to facilitate a feeling of camaraderie among us. I felt honored and proud to be associated with Team Survivor Marin." -- Patrice Wiper
