Team Survivor History
|
|
Sally Edwards, the national spokesperson for the Danskin Triathlon series, got the idea for Team Survivor in 1995. Her goal was to create teams of women breast cancer survivors that would complete Danskin triathlons. These teams would honor breast cancer survivors and raise cancer awareness. With support from Maggie Sullivan, VP of Sports Marketing at Danskin, Inc., the training programs were established. Sixty women across the U.S. participated in Danskin Team Survivor events the first year. Team Survivor then expanded to provide year-round exercise programs for women with all types of cancer. Lisa Talbott, a fitness and therapeutic exercise specialist, found that many women in the Seattle area needed support for more than just a once-a-year event. This resulted in the development of Team Survivor Northwest, a nonprofit organization that provided the first year-round exercise programs. Team Survivor USA is now a national organization, with more than 3,000 women participating in exercise programs, health education and sporting events in 23 cities in 14 states. Each team encourages cancer survivors to take an active role in regaining and maintaining their health and fitness. |
